Active Travel

Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team, in collaboration with the Environment Section, has set up a programme to monitor air quality across the Metropolitan Area.

Six air quality/noise monitors at the following strategic locations:

  • Old Cratloe Road
  • Mary Immaculate College
  • South Circular Road
  • Childers Road
  • Canal Bank
  • Parkway Shopping Centre

The monitors will provide data which will allow the team to measure air quality and noise levels before and after the delivery of Active Travel schemes across the Metropolitan Area.

This will allow the Active Travel team to assess the latest trends in each of the above areas, before and after enhanced pedestrian and cycling infrastructure has been delivered.

The monitors will provide data based on the Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality Index for Health (AQIH). This is a scale that is designed to help understand the impact of air quality on health. It is a health protection tool that can be used to make decisions to reduce short-term exposure to air pollution. A score of 10 means the air quality is very poor and a score of 1 to 3 inclusive means that the air quality is good.
